Nov. 5th, 2006 - CMJ Report

The drive up to NYC was gorgeous and we got to see what fall looks like to people who don't live in sub tropical cities. The best part of course is the changing colors of the leaves. Deep reds, purples, gold, light greens almost yellow, just lovely for the heart and a pleasure for the eye. We stopped in Athens for Halloween, and then drove to Washington DC the next day to visit with Jose and have some fun. DC is such a fun city! Jose was a gracious host as usual and we all had a lovely romantic dinner in the rain and took a taxi ride back to his apartment. He swears you can see the white house from down his street but you've got to really crane your neck to get a good look around all the trees and buildings. He lives in a great spot though. The next day we drove straight to NYC and went straight to Lincoln Center to pick up our badges. Driving through the city is a huge pain the ass, but for a tourist (who doesn't have to deal with it on a daily basis), it's a fun, exciting ride!! We found a crazy parking spot and were all giddy about being in "our city" as we gleefully made our way to the correct building for artist badge pickup. Well, no sooner than we enter the building but who do we see? The whole HHBTM crew fresh from a 12 hour drive picking up their badges too!! It was fun, we took pictures (well, I made everyone pose over and over for pictures, but you know they loved it!), talked about our plans and our drives, got our badges, and started making our way out. Well then wouldn't you know we bump into Ruben and Ferny!! Fun fun fun! They were on their way to a daytime Apples in Stereo show and we parted ways with them to try and find parking near the venue. I don't know if you know about parking in Manhattan. HA! Ha I say! So in the early afternoon we headed out to the area around Cakeshop to see if we could find a place to station our car for the whole night that was close enough for us to load in. Guess what? We did find one! So did Casper and the Cookie-van because they were only a few spots down from us closer to the venue! Good luck all around and lots of merriment was going on, the streets were packed, the venues were packed, the shows were packed, and it was fun and excitement everywhere. Of course the hipsters had to pretend not to be excited but you could see it in their tightly pursed lips and half lidded eyes. They were pumped to be there!
The HHBTM showcase was fantastic; everyone performed well and had a lovely time of it. The next day we got some text messages telling us that we were on the Pitchfork website and sure enough, we were called a "highlight" of the night!
We slept over at Rubens and he was a super gracious host as well. We've been lucky that way to have kind people with fold out couches and whatnot as friends in all kinds of cities. We had a relaxing and delicious Brooklyn breakfast with Ruben and high tailed it out of the city to College Park, MD for our next show. It was c-c-c-cold in Maryland; the kind of cold that hurts your bones and stings your face and fingertips, even inside your gloves. We played in the UMB radio station office and met some nice people. The next day we woke up and drove wee wee wee all the way home. It's always so good to come home. --> -->

what's goin' on [26 Oct 2006|05:17pm]
We have been very busy (who isn't, right?).. Next week we head to NYC to play a CMJ Showcase with some of our finest labelmates! We are very proud to be showcasing alongside Casper & the Cookies, Keith John Adams, Russian Spy Camera, and Poison Control Center! The bands will perform in this order starting at 8:30pm: Poison Control Center, Russian Spy Camera, Baby Calendar, Keith John Adams, Casper & the Cookies, ending around 12:30am. When we get back there is a lot of work to be done. Besides our jobs, which keep us very busy and tired lately, we are planning many things at once and have some things going on in our families and personal lives to attend to. We're going to record a new song for the HHBTM Vol.4 Sampler and already have the songs recorded and ready to go for the Split 7" single with Fishboy. Both should be out early next year. Gingerbread Dog has been doing very well, we're really happy about that because we worked tediously and lovingly on that album!

The rest of this year is basically planned out for us, with lots of preparation and hard work for 2007. We expect a very interesting year coming up...

ack we're in Washington DC travelling with Keith John Adams, our label-mate who's visiting from London, England. He's teaching us all about English customs and funny new words and we're teaching him about 9heads and buttknockers and all the other crude things we say. we had a fun show with The Max Levine Ensemble and some other touring fun bands last night in a basement in Maryland and today we head to North Carolina before going back to Athens to play the Casper and the Cookies CD release show... we're pretty excited. Then back home to relax until we tour again in October. We also just found out that we're playing the CMJ showcase in NYC this year along with some of our labelmates, pretty sweet.

Athens Popfest Review [13 Aug 2006|05:11pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

the Athens Popfest was a smashing success! So much good music, so many really nice people, so many crazy stories, and to top it all off, the crazy athens dance parties to end all dance parties. oh and the story that will never go away, Arik got punched in the eye by Jason Jones dancing onstage during Bunnygrunt's set.

a review of our popfest set:
read it, comment it, be proud of your baby c's! we did our best to rep Miami!:D

Here's another little write-up reppin' 305:

Now that we've been home for a few days and had time to unpack our bags and stretch our road legs, it's about time for a quick tour overview - this summer was... it was something really special. Nearly 3 months on the road, playing shows, meeting people, and either witnissing or participating in a plethora of craziness. We are so grateful to all the wonderful people we met who treated us so kindly!! Thank you all so much, everyone who came to a show, housed us, fed us, or laughed with us in any way... THANK YOU! It was an amazing experience that we won't soon forget. We will probably never tour for that long consecutively ever again (don't hold us to that)

LMFP, where are you?!?! [27 Jun 2006|02:16am]
camera batteries dead, lost the charger in Idaho... had a GREAT show in Buffalo thanks to the kindness of a nice band called Ice Cream Social who put a lot of effort into making it a great night... and it was!
Tour is crazy, we are crazy, we meet crazy people, we eat crazy food. we played in a basement in New Paltz, NY last night. there was lots of rain and mud and plenty of friendly folks. Saw Peter (Chin up Meriwether) again and met & stayed with Eric who does the Gadabout Film Festival. now we're in the big gleaming city!! well, not really. I started singing "start spreading the news" while walking up to Marlin's apartment in the Bronx at 1am while carrying a bunch of luggage and he patiently explained to me that it probably wasn't the best time for that... "just blend in" he said. YEA RIGHT! we look like fukin' goofballs right now. hahaaa! oh well, we got 2 tight NYC shows to look forward to - please tell anyone you know around here to come out, it'll be fuuuun!! thanks!

June 28th @ The Midway [25 Avenue B / 212- 253-2595] (with NOVELTYPE from Hialeah/Miami, FL - our buddy who moved to NY) * http://www.myspace.com/clubmidway *

and June 29th @ Cake Shop, a badass venue that's a bakery/coffeeshop/music store on the top floor with a bar and show space in the basement [152 Ludlow, between Stanton & Rivington]
* http://myspace.com/cakeshopnyc * (for some reason, our show is not on their Myspace page, but it is confirmed and will be a great show, it should be posted by tomorrow)

we haven't mentioned Wonder Lake in our tour journal yet and that is an injustice! It is a place that suggests its name, with fun & kind people who sang and danced to our songs, leaving the basement floor dreched with sweat and our faces plastered with smiles. that was the kind of show that gives us fuel to keep going when things get a little rough. all in all, we've had it pretty damn good and we're thankful.

if you haven't been to pittsburgh, you really should. it's a diamond in the rough kind of city! lots of great architecture, nice folks, places to party, places to relax, places to do whatever the crap you want to do and people to do it with. good place to be. lots of bridges! lots of architectural oddities and strange roadways. great place! we're staying with some kind folks (specifically, Laura of Great Ants, a really cool band you should check out!) in a building full of spacious artist lofts with high ceilings. ooh boy nothing like spacious, clean apartments with high ceilings! aaaaaahhh yeeees, so luxurious. so hello to everyone who's been reading our journal, even the people who don't have lj accounts or don't comment, lots of people have told us that they read it - thank you for reading! we do love tellin' stories & love when people are interested in them. :) looove, BC

crazy house parties galore! [08 Jun 2006|02:08am]
The northwest has treated us very well! Vashon Island was tons of fun, Bellingham was party-time-USA, and Seattle tonight was a blast! mmm pancakes, fruit, coffee, fish sticks, noodles, garlic carrots! yay for lots of new friends, picture taking, long walks, and bonding like you might not ever see each other again, but knowing that you will. :) making friends has always been one of the best parts of touring and it's amazing that we keep meeting such wonderful people!

we made 2 new friends who are touring via grayhound with their acoustic guitars and a whole group of friends in washington state. there are so many good stories that we're too tired to type, but all ya need to know is that we're having a awesome time right now. ^_^ lots of new pics too, they will tell the story better, these pictures start in southern california and lead up to yesturday:

the vegas strip can be a dangerous place... you know in the commercials "what happens in vegas, stays in vegas".. well it's true. :X

driving through the desert, you might think you see a lake, but it's really a mirage - don't be fooled! also, if you're driving through southern california and you see an exit to a cliff or beach and you think to yourself, I'd love to pull over and feel the cool water and climb down that cliff, but I'm in a hurry.. should I pull over?... DO IT! It's so worth it.

We stayed in LA last night, Soren has a house on a steep hill that our car just couldn't quite overcome, so we parked a little down the hill and walked up. Weeeird! Our tire broke but we fixed it. Also, from his balcony, you can see the Hollywood sign and he was telling us about his celebrity sightings, but we have to keep it confidential.

Today we pretended to be students at Univ of California and got free sandwiches. And that leads up to now, we're sitting at the place where we're playing tonight - Gio's on campus at Univ of Cal Santa Barbara (if you know anyone who lives around here, please tell them to come, IT'S FREEeeeeEEE) - hanging out in the warm sun (but it's still cold to us miamians) just relaxing, blending in with all the californers.

Today we were talking about what our favorite places to visit have been, we talked about all the good things and the bad things about each city we've seen and came to the conclusion that the more places we see, the more we miss Miami. I won't lie, there are a lot cooler places with cooler things, better scenery, better weather, but home is home. Miami is warm, we can wear tshirts all year, our friends and families are there, there are lots of parks and beaches and diversity (we take that for granted in miami, but it's not like that everywhere else), and it's just home.

through snow & hail, still having fun [28 May 2006|10:59pm]
tour's super fun, lots of awesome and crazy things have happened but we have no time to write about them. we had practially free breakfast in denver at a donation only vegan breakfast they have every saturday morning, met a lot of great people, saw our buds in wichita, played at a dance party in a thrift store in utah, PLAYED IN THE SNOW ON A MOUNTAIN, drove through mountains and desert and hail and something that looked like snow or hail or some white puffs of ice falling from the sky and we were so amazed cuz we never see snow! it actually started snowing and we danced around outside because we were so amazed to see snow in the middle of may in beautiful mountains in utah. tonight we're in vegas, just played a fun show, got free awesome food and made some more cool friends, we're going to go with our new friends and walk the crazy vegas strip tonight, we're so excited! last time we were in vegas we didnt get to go and gamble and go nuts drinking booze and eating steaks (we arent really going to do those things, just walk around and take pictures).

if anyone wants to donate a 9 volt adapter for our keyboard, we've lost it twice on this tour, please do so. also, arik's birthday is june 7th so whoever wants to mail him things or give him presents, please do so. love you all!!
